Meet FAQ
When do Swim Meets start?
All Swim Meets begin at 6:00 PM. Please arrive at Home Swim Meets at 4:30 PM for directions and warm-ups. Plan to arrive at Away Swim Meets at 4:45 PM for warm-ups and directions, unless otherwise notified. Read weekly emails and check the website for updates on times. You must check in when you arrive –events should be written on your hands.
What should my family bring to a Swim Meet?
Suggestions: beach towel(s), chairs, games, books, fruit, water, money for concessions, and plenty of enthusiasm!
How are the Events my child swims in the Meets determined?
The Coaches decide what Events will benefit both your child and the team. Please support the Coaches in their decisions.
How do I help my child keep track of what Events he/she is swimming in?
The coaches will email out the events your swimmer is swimming the day of or night before the meet. Parents are encouraged to write the events on their hands prior to coming to the meet or the Check-in Parents will do so before the Meet begins. Parents should also keep track of this information. Listen carefully to the Announcer to determine which Event is currently being swum, and what Events should be at the Clerk of Course. Make sure your child arrives at the Clerk on time. When swimmers check in at the Clerk of Course, they are seated by Event, Heat and Lane, so that when it is time for their race, they are behind the blocks and ready to go. Swimmers are normally called to the Clerk of Course 1 or 2 Events before their Event.
Individual Events are scored (1st place to 6th place): 7 points/5 points/4 points/3 points/2 points/1 point. Relay Events are scored 14/10/8/6/4/2 points. During the course of the evening, Swim Meet results will be posted outside the bathroom during Home Meets. The check in parents should be able to tell you where results will be posted at Away Meets.
What if we miss practices and/or swim meets for vacations?
All swim meets and practices are voluntary. No swimmer will ever be penalized for missing practices or swim meets.
How long are swim meets and what is a half meet?
The length of time of any swim meet will vary based on the size of the teams swimming, weather, and pace. For CORA, our meets are usually around 3-4 hours total. Each meet consists of 55 events. Events 1-28 make up the first half and events 29-55 make up the second half of the meet.
My child is nervous about swimming in meets. What can we do?
Swim team is about building relationships, memories, having fun, while learning swim strokes and racing against the clock at meets. It’s ok to let your child come and watch a swim meet so they may feel more comfortable participating in a later swim meet.
